Music collage

This piece is from a 2 Dimensional design class and is one of my favorite traditional works I have. The goal of this project was to create a collage from pictures cut from magazines to represent the feeling or an image that comes to mind when you listen to a certain musician.

The musician I chose for this project was John Mayer. I feel his music, although relaxed and laid back, is always on the precipice of something great. The music in most of his songs builds throughout, so the end feels bigger than the beginning, in my opinion. When I listen to it, I feel a swell of emotion in whichever feeling the song is written about, so I knew I wanted to incorporate water and crashing waves. His music is very passionate, so along with sunsets I set out to look for red pieces to add to the image, and when I found the billowing blood-red silk I felt it was a perfect addition. His songs can also be delicate, so I stitched the seams of the romantic sunsets with the small flowers. I left the right edge a little rough and torn, to reflect his lyrics, which usually don’t have very many perfect endings. In the end I was very happy with the overall composition and the resulting image.

I put this in my Graphic Design category, because I feel I used all the same elements and processes to create a new piece on paper as I would on a computer. Should I upload a graphite or charcoal drawing completely from my own hands, I would add a traditional category.
