Flash Chameleon

This was a project for my Flash (Adobe Animate) class, which I feel was one of the classes I was most successful in that I’ve taken at AACC. The goal of the project was to have a main character and a set of buttons. Four to move the character around, and one to call the character into action. I chose to draw a chameleon, and when the “yum!” button was pushed, his action was to stand up and catch a fly.

The entire scene is animated, but unfortunately WordPress won’t allow me to upload a .swf file and, although I’ve searched for ways to do it, I can’t find a way around it that I won’t have to pay for. The animation for this piece goes much farther than the screenshots show; while the chameleon is resting, his eye moves around in every direction, and his stomach is also moving up and down breathing (captured down in the first photo screenshot). When the button is pressed, a fly zig-zags his way into frame as the chameleon stands up, and his eye follows the fly’s movements. Then finally, the chameleon’s tongue flicks out, wraps around the fly, and pulls him in. There is also sound in this animation; the buzzing of the fly and the slurp of the chameleon’s tongue.

My work for this class is some of my favorite I’ve done in my college career; I found I really enjoy drawing in Flash/Animate and animating, it comes much more intuitively to me than Illustrator. If I find a way to upload this to WordPress (or even flickr) in it’s full glory, I would love to post more about my projects from this class.
